Guardian Sport -25 March 09

A piece I did today for tomorrow's Guardian Sport pages.

About anger/ petulence/ abusive behaviour and general miserable narky gittishness on the football pitch, as demonstrated frequently by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, and how, unchecked, it does them and their careers a disservice.

Pretty happy with this. Not a bad likeness of the man ( potato) Rooney, methinks. Replaced his Vodafone logo with a fizzing time-bomb. Texture shown on the grass is created by overlaying scanned in, & much-used, blotting paper over a flat green block of colour.

As always, click on the image to Enlarge.

Guardian Money -16 August 08

A piece for last Saturday's Guardian.

Apparently, now is a good time to rent somewhere, as the shortage of houses being sold has led to a surfeit of properties available to rent, as a consequence of which the prices that landlords are able to demand have fallen.

My scenario above is based on the 1970's UK sitcom "Rising Damp" about a seedy and unscrupulous landlord Rigsby and his three tenants Alan (?), Miss Jones and Philip (who always seemed to get the better of him).

Guardian Sport -10 April 08

A piece for today's Guardian Sports section, done late yesterday.

It was for an article severely criticising Minster for Sport, Tessa Jowell, and her total incompetence, like estimating the cost of the Olympic Velodrome at £72m, and then, five months later, giving a revised figure of £242m!!

Unfortunately, at the 11th hour (well 4 pm actually) I was informed that due to the last minute placement of advertising the image needed to shrink to a miniscule 5.4 cm by 6 cm down, meaning that all I could show of the original was the Sports Minister's face.

Here are both pieces, the long original and the final truncated form.

It's very hard to catch a likeness, particularly under pressure, but there's definitely something there of Ms Jowell I reckon.

Guardian Education 26 February 08

Another piece to accompany Teacher of the Year, Phil Beadle's column.

This one is about the use of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, in Education.
Mister Beadle is not a fan, and neither am I. Horse-shit and Mind-Games basically.

In the article our Phil suggests slapping dog poo on the lapel of any colleague
daring to use this technique on you - with the bold retort "Mirror that!"

Guardian Sport 28 Nov 07

A piece connecting Electoral Success (or failure) of the county's Premiers
with Sporting Victory (or Loss, respectively)

I think I've captured a good likeness there, but in case anyone's unsure,
that's UK Prime Minister, Gordon Brown

To IF*ers, I know this has nowt to do with zoos (well, poetically, perhaps?),
I just haven't had a chance so far this week. Sorry

Guardian Work 28 July 07

A piece for this Saturday's Guardian Work section.
Its about an employer who is having trouble convincing his colleagues that he'd much rather find and stay at the level of work he enjoys than keep on climbing the managerial ladder. My second job now with Sarah Habershon, who is a delight to work for.
Recently have been trying to use a more restrained or simplified palette and to use more actual paint/ink to create the surfaces rather than 'faking' it using scanned in textures.

Guardian Work 21 July 07

A piece for tomorrow's Guardian, about a pig of a boss making inappropriate overtures towards a female colleague, by asking her to choose his shirts for him under the ruse of accompanying him to a client meeting.

Guardian Education 17 July 07

Here's a piece I had in this week's Guardian Education section, by ever brilliant Teacher of the Year, Philip Beadle.

The broom refers to the author's suggested repost for over-stretched teachers asked to take on ever more work duties - "Would you like me to stick ( said cleaning implement) up my @r$e and sweep the floor while I'm at it?!". Colourful imagery ( to which I could only allude, for obvious reasons)!
