The Penis in Popular Culture

Why is the depiction of the male member still
considered such a taboo in today’s society?
And how is it truly represented by creatives
and influential figures in today’s culture?

The Artful Todger proposes to be a light-hearted book, examining the artistic representation of the penis in today’s culture, and invites you to contribute. Be it a line drawing, a detailed sketch, a collage, a hand crafted piece or pop up, we want your representation in our book. There will be a whole chapter dedicated to current interpretations and selected entries will be published with the most successful entry used for the front cover. All copyright will remain that of the artist and all artists will be credited unless otherwise requested. Donations from the published work will be made towards testicular cancer charities. Successful entries may also be selected for use in the forthcoming exhibition of the same name. Please send all entries to artful-todger@hotmail.co.uk by the 30th June 2008 for selection in jpeg format, 72dpi, no larger than A4, with your contact details. By submitting your entry you are confirming that you are over 18 and that you own the copyright to your image.

Yes, I know, I'm a bit tardy with this one
(what is it now, two, maybe three weeks late!?)
but I was busy that week but really wanted to do this image for it.

Charles Pierre Baudelaire (1821 - 1867), poet and general miscreant, finds a quiet moment of reflection in his potting shed.

Biro sketch. coloured up &c. in PS. I've chosen the decadent shades of Absinthe and Claret as the palette for this rakish portrait.

Half a minute! What's this?

A Spiv or WIDE Boy (Latin: Puer Pansus) on the Streets of London, confident and shifty all at once. This Flash 'Arry thinks he's Errol Flynn or maybe Chet Baker even, though in truth he's just a petty crim from Whitechapel out to make a bob or two. It's Post-WWII for sure (the light's are on!) but pre-51 'cos there's rationing still on. "What you after Missis? Nylons? Valium? French Letters? Chops? A bit o' How's-yer-father?!"

My first 'true' IF* entry for a lil' while.
And a wee experiment in colour combinations

This week's theme, "Wide" put me in mind of the great Divine Comedy song, 'National Express'.
A brilliant toon, inspired lyrics.

On the national express theres a jolly hostess
Selling crisps and tea
Shell provide you with drinks and theatrical winks
For a sky-high fee
Mini-skirts were in style when she danced down the aisle
Back in 63 (yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
But its hard to get by when your arse is the size
Of a small country

Morning Advertiser - Punch & Enterprise

A piece I've just this minute finished for next Thursday's issue of pub trade mag the Morning Advertiser.

Its about big pub companies Punch Taverns and Enterprise Inns, who often come in for a lot of flack and criticism and which the author of the article here defends.
